Yale Publishing Course Focuses on Leadership
Last year, the prestigious Yale Publishing Course partnered with the Yale School of Management (SOM) to create a new and improved curriculum for mid- to senior-level publishing professionals. In 2018, that partnership is still going strong, and is equipping industry pros with the tools they need to lead their teams into the ever-changing world of books.
“We now focus more on helping the attendees hone their business, managerial, and leadership skills,” says YPC Director Tina C. Weiner. “New sessions include evaluating one’s own leadership skills, framing discussions to achieve desired outcomes, teambuilding, enhancing team performance, using social media to promote your brand, and fostering innovation and creativity. Sessions by leading industry experts provide real-world experience and practices that complement the theory and research presented by the SOM faculty.”
Though leadership is at the core of the program, the YPC doesn’t solely focus on the nuts and bolts of business. The full range of publishing—from editorial to marketing to sales—is covered during the weeklong course.
“It was a marvelous and fantastic week, packed with lots of information, training, lessons, and tips,” says Nella Klopotek von Glowczewski of Klopotek North America. “This course will enable you to see further than you did before in publishing, no matter where you are right now. I am delighted and grateful that I attended and can highly recommend it to everyone who love the publishing industry (and is getting into management).”
The takeaways are meant to be practical, and the sessions are meant to be hands on. And because magazine and book publishing professionals are creative, creativity is highly encouraged.
“Several sessions are built with time to break into workshops made up of smaller groups,” says Weiner. “These workshops—on team building, problem solving, etc.—enable the participants to work together and then bring the results of the group assignment back to the classroom for further discussion with the faculty. Q&A and in-class debates are also encouraged.”
Having attended the Yale Publishing Course in the past, I can tell you there is no great meeting of the minds than in those classrooms. Attendees come from all over the country and all over the world to learn, to network, and to spend time with people passionate about the industry.
“It always amazes me how quickly the attendees—who come from all over the world and represent all segments of the publishing world—bond with each other,” Weiner tells me. “The discussions that begin in the classroom continue at meals, receptions, and breaks throughout the week and then through social media long after the week is over.”
The best part? Weiner says those connections last for years to come.
“YPC alumni tell me that they have become friends, and even business partners, with classmates from the Course. Many also have remained in contact with the speakers. I love the fact that the YPC community continues beyond the week in New Haven.”
That’s why so many speakers—and attendees—return to the course time and time again. Each year, a few students return, and there is a growing number of publishers who regularly send participants because they’ve seen the value of the YPC first hand. Weiner expects this to continue.
“Since the curriculum has changed so much since its move last year to SOM, I expect more people from previous years to return in the future,” she says. “Although many of the faculty return year after year, the presentations are always updated and focus on the latest challenges and opportunities facing publishers today.”
