WOMEN'S MEDIA GROUP CREATES EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT MINORITY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Contributions have come from Primedia, Time Warner, CapCities-ABC, Bloomberg LP and HBO.
Responding to demand from media companies, the Women's Media Group is expanding its groundbreaking minority internship program. To that end, the WMG is creating an endowment for its tax-exempt Educational Foundation. The first major contributions have come from Primedia, Time Warner, CapCities-ABC, Bloomberg LP and HBO. These donors will have first choice of interns for Summer, 2001.Since the program started in 1996, the group has successfully placed 15 motivated, minority women as summer interns at top media companies. The program increases diversity in the media workforce and lays the groundwork for future careers for the interns, who are college juniors.
Companies where interns have been placed include PBS, Penguin Putnam, Simon & Schuster, Hyperion, Family Circle, Faith Childs Literary Agency, Doubleday Direct, The Literary Guild and R. R. Donnelley & Sons. Sponsors have been unanimously enthusiastic about the performance and commitment of the interns.
According to Jamie Raab, Senior Vice President and Publisher of Warner Books, "This program is a wonderful way for companies interested in creating a more diverse workplace to reach out to minority students and introduce them to the possibilities available in all areas of the media." Arlynn Greenbaum, WMG Fundraising Chair, concludes, "We are very pleased with the initial support from several enlightened media companies, and look forward to having many more join their ranks so that we may reach our endowment goal of $100,000 and expand our efforts."
Founded in 1973, the Women's Media Group is a New York-based non-profit association of more than 250 women who have achieved prominence in the many field of media including book publishing, print journalism, electronic publishing, television, radio and film.
